Join us for a hands-on journey into the ancient art of tablet weaving—also known as card weaving—where pattern and technique meet tradition and storytelling. This workshop will introduce you to the fundamentals of this time-honored craft, used for centuries across cultures to create strong, decorative bands for clothing, belts, and ceremonial garments.

You'll learn to:

  • Read threading drafts and understand how color and card placement affect the pattern

  • Follow turning instructions to create intricate designs

  • Experiment with patterns from historical and cultural sources

Tablet weaving has been practiced for thousands of years. These woven bands were more than functional—they carried cultural identity, social status, and artistic expression. Today, they continue to be used as trims, carrier straps and accessories such as bracelets.

Whether you're a textile enthusiast, a history lover, or a complete beginner, this workshop offers a meaningful way to explore global weaving traditions while developing a hands-on skill.

If you're already comfortable with inkle looms, you'll find tablet weaving both familiar and refreshingly complex. It builds on many of the same concepts while introducing you to a dynamic new method of pattern control using simple cards.

You have the option of purchasing an inkle loom with the workshop or use one from the studio for the workshop. For those who own an inkle loom, you can bring along your own inkle loom to the studio for the class so you can learn how to set up your own loom. Each participant will go home with a set of 10 tablets.

Come ready to learn, weave, and connect with the rich cultural heritage behind every turn of the card.
