Community Nights
Our Community Nights are a space to gather and spend time with others who share an interest in fibre and making. They are informal evenings for conversation, connection and community whether you come with something on your needles, a project at the loom, or simply yourself.
Each gathering takes its own shape. Sometimes there is a conversation or a little something to learn; sometimes it is simply an evening of making, chatting and being together.
Think of it as a third space for our fibre community, a place to meet, linger and connect beyond the studio and our individual making
In conjunction with Spinning and Weaving Week, our next Community Night will take place on Friday, 9 October 2026 from 6pm to 9pm, with the following sharing taking place at 7.00pm.
Planning Ahead: Reducing the Burden of Decision for our Next of (s)K(e)in
Our fibre things have a way of accumulating.
A little more yarn here. A new wheel there. A loom that has been waiting patiently for the right project. Books, tools, fibres, unfinished work and a stash that would most likely outlive us.
Over the past few years, we have encountered several situations involving the passing on of a loved one’s belongings. It got us thinking - what happens to our fibre stashes and equipment when we are no longer around to decide what happens to them?
Many of us have spent years building collections that are deeply personal, but may be difficult for someone else to navigate. Our loved ones may not know what is valuable, what has sentimental meaning, what can be passed on to another maker, or simply what on earth to do with that enormous bag of fibre.
This is why we have decided to work with a friend in financial and legacy planning to develop this special presentation. The sharing will briefly introduce several aspects of planning ahead, including Advance Medical Directives, Advance Care Planning, Lasting Power of Attorney, nominations and planning for a will.
As part of the conversation around will writing, we will take a closer look at the often-overlooked category of “other items of value”. This is a category that may be particularly relevant to fibre makers, whose collections can include equipment and materials that represent a considerable investment, as well as things that could continue to be useful to another maker. A spinning wheel, a loom, a collection of tools or a carefully accumulated stash may be worth far more — financially or practically — than someone outside the fibre community might realise. How might we make it easier for others to know what we have, what might be worth passing on, and who might be able to give these things a new lease of life?
This is not intended to be a legal or financial planning seminar, nor is it intended to tell anyone what they should do. Rather, it is an opportunity to learn about some of the things we can put in place, and to start finding out what is involved, and thinking about what we might want to put in place.
You may already have a good idea of what you would like to happen to your fibre things. You may have never thought about it at all. Either way, perhaps the first step is simply to start the conversation.
Because while our fibre things may have many more stories left in them, someone else may one day have to decide where those stories go next.
